keeping track

With some encouragement from my parents, I picked up a GPS tracking device for my trip and got it fired up today.

This handy little thing tracks my movement and allows me to send various types of messages including check-ins, personalized messages, a "help" message out to a select group of contacts and even an S.O.S. signal to the closest US Embassy, emergency response groups in the area and my emergency contacts. Pretty cool safety net and way for people to keep track of where I've been.

If you want to keep up with the trip, check out the link below:

I'm officially on "last" time now. This is my last Sunday night before I leave. Tomorrow's also my last Monday at work. While I'm will miss the feeling of a Sunday night at home, I can't say the same for the Monday morning feeling.

  1. My parents got me a SPOT when I was trekking over the Alps last year.

Before I left, I gave it a test run with a hike near Lake Chelan... and at some point I dropped it on a rock. We finished our hike, and as we're driving away, we see the sheriff speeding the other direction.

The SPOT had erroneously called Search and Rescue when I dropped it on the rock. The people at SPOT said that my unit must have been defective, and they replaced it. But I've always been a little hesitant to use the "track progress" feature since them. I just turn it on at the end of the hike and "check in".

I'm not trying to scare you out of using it. I'm just saying: "don't drop it on a rock."

What model did you end up getting?
